The congressmen who voted for the holding of the GMA constituent assembly feel the universal heat. Putting up a brave face, many of them contemplate the possible impact of their decision on their candidacies and political future. Some even blamed the Senate (?) for the HOR Con-Ass decision.
There is a miscalculation of the public’s anti-GMA sentiment–it’s transferable. In the 2007 elections, it translated to losses of erstwhile high-rating senatorial candidates. It also led to Senator Trillanes’ victory who ran only on this single issue. The GMA kiss of death, despite Secretary Gilbert Teodoro’s optimism, is a major factor in the coming 2010 elections, particularly if GMA continues at the helm of the current government.
The congressmen went out on a limb when they–for their own reasons–chose to push forward with the Con-Ass initiative. In many places, even in their own dynastic heartlands, GMA is the current issue. Combined with the rising anti-trapo sentiments and various citizen’s initiatives in electoral monitoring, there is a greater chance this accommodation of GMA’s survival scheme will cost them their political influence, even their own seats.
This is still too early to see how the Con-Ass participation will actually impact on them. However, the trend is the widening and deepening of the opposition to the initiative. A defiant House of Representatives will increasingly be beleaguered along with GMA herself. The unconstitutional convening of the constituent assembly itself can tip the balance and send the whole thing spiralling into a constitutional crisis. People power is a distinct possibility in this case.
The worst-case scenario stares the congressmen in their collective faces. Charter change this late into the electoral scenario turns them into political pariahs–it may even lead to their political demise.

Now that we know the names of these traitors in congress, its time to take this protest to the next level, most if not all of these congressmen and their families are dynasties in their own district, running their own family businesses in their locality if not nationaly, We should Identify all their financial interest in any field and launch a massive boycott campaign to all these congressmen’s family businesses. We should hit them where it’ll hurt, the source of all their power. It will be a targetted attack on those who betrayed the filipino people. Shouts & protest can help but a more innovative approach is needed to bring these congressmen to their knees. We have the power of the internet to do all these. Lets identify all those family interests.

Yes, Muroami.. completely agree. The focus now should be our own respective congress representative .. if he/she voted “Aye”. They served as Gloria’s pillars in all the past impeachment tries. What they have done now is the worst.. most blatant, most arrogant, most treacherous…most…gads !! running out of adjectives !
Mr. Casiple, you said this is the “tipping point for cha-cha”. Do you consider this situation now also as the “tipping point for Gloria”? Or are they one and the same thing?
This term “tipping point” had been bandied around every time Gloria faced a major crisis and people launched protests and rallies. But those events never tipped her over. Why do you think that now is the real and true “tipping point”?
MonC: “Tipping point” simply means the point in time where the situation changes direction, sometimes abruptly and dramatically. When I used the term here, it basically points to the GMA charter change initiative having reached the end and opens up a new situation–possibly leading to people power or to martial rule. The situation then will replace the election as primary scenario. However, I said “may” because only a desperate push for Con-Ass will tip the point. Otherwise, backing down from Con-Ass will strengthen the scenario of the 2010 elections. At any rate, the GMA cha-cha agenda ends.
This does not necessarily means the tipping point for GMA’s hold on power. That may happen in the succeeding scenario of either the elections or people power or within the people’s resistance to martial rule.
And so today, the Supreme Court dismissed the anti-Con-Ass petition of Lozano et al…saying there is no justiciable issue yet.
In your reading, do you think the Congressmen will therefore now make the move to convene the Consituent Assembly and force the justiciable issue?
By doing so, they would no longer be announcing that they would commit “rape”. They would already be committing the “rape”. This is a crime for which they could presumably all land in jail… if the SC later rules they have committed the “rape”.
But if the SC plays their game and rules in their favor, the ultimate party to be blamed would be the SC…making them the ultimate Scapegoats, so to speak.
I find it really hard to imagine that the SC would play their game though. It’s too dangerous and risky even for Gloria’s justices. The House and the SC may not come out of the situation in one piece if this happens considering the raging temper of the public if and when it does come to that scenario.
That scenario implies that the public has nowhere else to go for redress except the streets… unless… unless the military is called upon either by Gloria or the people themselves to step in and …Ever nearer and nearer to whose tipping point, MonC?
martial law? Bakit may threat ba sa estado?
